A brief geographical profile:
Mauritius is a tiny visible remnant of raging volcanic
eruption which ocurred some 13 million years ago. Two
main volcanos influenced the topography of Mauritius as
it exists in present time. Today, the craters of these
now extinct volcanos are the mountain ranges of Black
River (in the west) and Trou Aux Cerfs (in the centre
of the island, near Curepipe.)
Mauritius is 65kms (40 miles) long, and 45kms (28
miles) wide. There is about 160km of coastline, and the
island is surrounded by coral reefs. There are 15
islets, and 5 are in the north, outside of Grand Baie.
They are Serpent Island, Round Island, Flat Island,
Gabriel Island and Coin de Mire Island. They are all
uninhabited, except for sea birds and other wildlife.
The island forms part of the Mascerene Archipelago,
which is made up of Rodrigues, St Brandon, Agalega,
Diego Garcia, Tromelin Island, and the French-owned
island of Reunion.
Africa is Mauritius's nearest neighbouring
continent. The island sits on Latitude 20 South, just
north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and is situated
between southern Africa and Australia, some 850km off
the eastern coast of Madagascar.

Sportfisher's location:
Sportfisher itself is situated in the north of the
island, in the heart of a very popular and
much-frequented village called Grand Baie. (See basic
map above.) Our offices border the seaward side of a
shopping mall known as Sunset Boulevard, and we are
adjacent to the much-loved Sunset Cafe, where sunsets
like the one below are experienced during most late
afternoons and dusks.
Grand Baie is about a one and a half hour drive from
Plaisance Airport, and has many beautiful resort hotels
on the magnificent beaches in the vicinity. Hotels such
as Club Med, Le Mauricia, Trou Aux Biches, Paradise
Cove, Legends, Merville Beach, Verandah Beach Hotel,
Maritim, Plantation, and many others are found in the
northern environs.
If you intend to book a few days fishing with us, I
really do recommend that you stay up in the northern
area someplace. If you book a room over on the east
coast (where there are admittedly also very beautiful
hotels and beaches, as well as the south and
south-east) the transport to and from us in Grand Baie
may be a bother, in that it can take around 45 minutes
to an hour of travelling time, depending on exactly
where you are staying, of course. You would need to
arrange for a taxi to take you to and from your hotel,
unless you are hiring a car. (For all our French and US
visitors - we drive on the left-hand side of the road.)
Most people enjoy Grand Baie and the north a great
deal, not only for Sportfisher and gamefishing,
but just for the general ambience of the village
and the area itself. Banks, restaurants, shopping
centres, taxis and other amenties are easily accessed
from here. It's just a fun place to be at,
and we hope to see you strolling around and having a
drink at Sunset Cafe soon!
